History
The idea of setting up an IT-themed city arose from a study conducted for the MSC Malaysia, which resulted in the conceptualisation of ‘Cyberjaya’. Cyberjaya, conceptualized to be the nucleus for the development of MSC Malaysia helps to launch the knowledge-based economy. While the MSC Malaysia’s objective is to help transform the country's economy from manufacturing to hi-tech industries, Cyberjaya's role was to be the provider of the best conducive optimum environment to house multimedia and ICT companies wishing to participate in the MSC Malaysia. It was thus launched in 1999 by the country's fourth Prime Minister YAB Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad.
The city was planned as a fully integrated city complete with modern amenities and facilities with the principal emphasis being on developing it as a catalyst for the growth of ICT enterprises and the multimedia industry in Malaysia. The goal was to establish and promote Cyberjaya as the regional and glocal ICT hub.
The original site for Cyberjaya was primarily undeveloped land consisting of oil palm plantations. With the plan being to fully develop the city in 2010, a comprehensive team was put together to look into the various aspects. The central theme for the development was to provide a quantum leap in standards and to develop a cutting edge centre incorporating sophisticated and state of the art integrated infrastructure and IT systems, as well as sophisticated and efficient transportation systems which would lure world-class multimedia and IT companies.
The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), the agency tasked with implementing the MSC Malaysia, is located in Cyberjaya to oversee the creation. The real estate implementation was privatized to Cyberview Sdn Bhd (Cyberview) in early 1997, comprising of subsidiaries of local companies such as Peremba, Renong, MK Land, County Heights, Golden Hope and companies of Selangor State Government. Government linked companies such as Telekom Malaysia and Tenaga Nasional were given the task to develop the infrastructure. The engineering management consultant, Pengurusan Lebuhraya Bhd (now acquired by Opus International Malaysia) was appointed to manage the construction of utilities and infrastructure, overseeing major construction firms of Peremba and United Engineers Malaysia.
In 1999, Setia Haruman Sdn Bhd was given the rights to develop Cyberjaya as the master developer. Cyberview assumed the role as landowner and is given the task to maintain the public infrastructure in Cyberjaya, together with the Sepang District Council.
Cyberjaya has since seen extensive building activities including a small mall, a boutique hotel, and numerous commercial buildings. The essential infrastructure that is woven and powers Cyberjaya are telephone lines, power roads and fibre-optic cables. With an exclusive resort like setting, modern conveniences of a brand new cyber city, top rated infrastructure and community facilities.
Today, Cyberjaya is one of the hottest corporate addresses around. It is now home to many multinational companies and also the location for the nation's top smart schools and institutions
