RECREATIONAL FORESTS
Teluk Bahang Forestry Recreational Park
Within the 100 ha Teluk Bahang Forestry Recreational Park are fresh water pools, children’s playground, rest huts, jungle trails and a Forestry Museum which showcases various species of tropical timber, timber products and insects. A varied range of flowering plants, insects, snakes, lizards and birds can be spotted along the many jungle tracks that lead to the heart of the forest.
Penang National Park
Previously known as the Pantai Acheh Forest Reserve the Park is unique in that it contains several different types of habitats including wetlands, mangroves, mudflats, coral reefs and turtle-nesting beaches. Green turtles make their way here from April to August while the Olive Redley visits the shores from September to February.
Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest
The Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest is also referred to as Bukit Ubat (or medicinal hill). There have been claims of recovery from minor ailments after a hike up the hill. The popular park has facilities that include a swimming pool, camping and picnic spots, jungle treks and accommodation.
Pulau Jerejak
Pulau Jerejak, a former penal colony, is a virtually undisturbed island with the rich diversity of over 210 species of flora and fauna. Towering tropical trees, lingering lianas and exotic orchids shelter remarkable species such as the Monitor Lizard and the White-Bellied Sea Eagle. The island also encompasses an ancient forest environment, which is believed to be older than the equatorial forests of the Amazon or the Congo.
