Penang is accessible by air, sea, train and road. Both the Malaysia Airlines and budget airlines, Air Asia offers daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Travelling to Penang by car from other states within Malaysia is convenient and safe. The North-South Expressway (NSE) and the East-West Highway links Butterworth in Penang to other parts of the country. The Penang Bridge, the third longest bridge in the world, links Seberang Perai, on the mainland, to Gelugor on the Island. Ferry services between Butterworth and the island operates 24 hours a day. Taking the train from neighbouring Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and other major towns to Butterworth is also possible.

 

There are numerous inexpensive ways of getting around Penang. Taxis and buses, are some of the most common modes of transportation. Tourists may however enjoy a ride on the trishaws or bicycles which both offer a unique mode of enjoying the city. RapidPenang, launched in mid 2007, operates a fleet of comfortable and clean buses which offer a convenient and comfortable way of getting around the city.
