History of Port Dickson

Port Dickson derived its name from a British high-ranking official, Sir John Frederick Dickson, who was posted to the Malay straits towards the end of the 19th century, At the time it was known as tanjung by the local Malays since it was situated in a small gulf, and arang or alang by the Chinese and Indians, because of the coal-mining activities taking place. Port Dickson quickly became a strategic port of call for many traders and merchants because of the spice trade, and form then on this idyllic town flourished.
