The National Monument or Tugu Negara is a proud reminder of the heroes who gave their lives for the nation during World War II and the
dark years of the Emergency (1948 to 1960) when communists sought to take over the country. Located across the road from the Lake
Gardens, this beautiful bronze sculpture was created by the same man who designed the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington– Felix de Weldon.
The monument is 15.5 metres high and surrounded by pretty fountains and a moat dotted with fl owering plants. It features seven soldiers from
the Malayan Security Forces. The number 7 was specially chosen to symbolise the 7 key qualities of fi ne leadership.
