The tourism industry is the second largest economic sector for Malaysia. In 2007, the country welcomed 20.1 million visitors and the national tourism receipts were RM 46 billion. For 2008, a total of 18,148,159 tourist arrivals from January to October 2008 were recorded as compared to 17,322,214 tourist arrivals for the same period in 2007, representing an increase of 4.8%. The Ninth Malaysian Plan has targeted that by 2010, the tourists' arrivals to the county should achieve 24 million arrivals.
"Inbound & Domestic Tourism - New Challenges and Directions" 15 January 2009
Organizer : MATTA
Venue : Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC)
The tourism industry continues to be very competitive in the international market and for Malaysia to remain competitive and be in the race for the tourism dollars, the country has to work even harder to increase her visibility to be a preferred destination to attract the tourists. The global economic slowdown since recent months has added pressure to an already challenging and competitive industry vis-a-vis our neighbouring countries.
As Malaysia plans ahead for the growth of its tourism industry, MATTA is organising this Symposium to allow policy makers, professionals, players and other stakeholders of the industry to take a few steps back to reflect, assess and evaluate on the current direction of the industry and thereafter to share and exchange experiences and ideas in an attempt to chart New Directions for our tourism industry in the face of economic uncertainties amidst a rapidly changing international marketplace.
Here is an opportunity for the stakeholders of the tourism industry to search deep inside with some hard questions - Where are we now and where do we want to go from here? Are we doing the right things? Are we being effective in our programmes and approaches? These are some questions that the Symposium aims to address in order to find new input and ideas to steer the industry forward into the future.
This Symposium is initiated to be open and direct; to look deep into the industry with the primary objective of providing constructive feedback and input to the Government and industry players as we move towards bringing the tourism industry in Malaysia to greater heights.
The programme of the Malaysian Tourism Symposium is enclosed herewith this Introduction Statement.
