Brunei Darussalam is located on the northern shore of the island of Borneo. It is one of the tiniest countries in the world and occupies less than 1% of Borneo’s land area. Brunei’s neighbours are the Indonesian province of Kalimantan and the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak.
Brunei is a lovely, peaceful country blessed by a mild, equatorial climate throughout the year. The majority of Bruneians are Malays. Distinctive indigenous tribes such as the Kedayan, Tutong and Belait also reside here as well as Chinese and other ethnicities. The offi cial language is Bahasa Melayu (Malay) but English is widely spoken.
Brunei is ruled under an independent sovereign constitutional Sultanate, with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi as the supreme executive authority. The country is economically dependent on its rich sources of oil although it is in the midst of diversifying into other industries. Brunei is currently one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefi ed natural gas Well-connected by air to major destinations around the world, Brunei has exceptionally good transportation links to its neighbours. Ferries link the country with the Malaysian island of Labuan off the coast of Sabah, and to the Malaysian towns of Limbang and Lawas in Sarawak.
Brunei also has an extensive overland road network which connects it to Sarawak and Sabah.
