Malaysia is well-endowed with natural resources in agriculture, forestry as well as minerals.

In terms of agriculture, Malaysia is the world's primary exporter of natural rubber and palm oil. Palm oil is also a major foreign exchange earner while the less extensive cash crops include sawn logs and sawn timber, cocoa, pepper, pineapple and tobacco.

While Tin once played a dominant role in the Malaysian economy today it is petroleum and gas which dominate the local mining industry. Offshore oilfields in Sabah, Sarawak and Terengganu have contributed much to the Malaysian economy and also to those three states.

Today, the Malaysian economy is more concentrated in manufacturing and tourism although oil palm and petroleum continue to play dominant roles. It is also embarking on a drive to promote more high-tech industries in Malaysia.

The goal of the nation is to be a developed nation by Year 2020.
