Malaysia's tax havens are Pulau Langkawi and Labuan. Duty free areas are also found at Rantau Panjang and Pengkalan Kubur in Kelantan, and Padang Besar and Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah. An interesting mix of duty free shops is also found at city centers and airports in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Penang.
Uniquely Malaysian are various handicrafts of local origin ranging from intricate silver, brass, and pewter items to pottery and rattan. The intricate bold designs and colors of Malaysian Batik set it apart from others within the region. Craft work such as the amazing huge kites which sing called the ‘wau’ are great to adorn your walls as would be the intricate carvings of the numerous indigenous tribes.
The best time to take advantage of the variety of wares available would be during Mega Sale Carnival when discounts galore are offered. The Mega Sales Carnival is held twice a year, from end July to early September and in December.
